Iceland Feb 2012

The Iceland trip proved to be a great success. The aurora came out to play for two nights and what a show The weather was surprisingly warm 11 degrees C in February was totally unexpected. The wind however was as vicious as last April and was bad enough to sandblast filters. At one point all of us looked like miners as the black sand worked its way into eyes ears and nostrils. When I got back to the guesthouse I literally poured sand from my pockets. Fighting wind is exhausting and means that inevitably shots are ruined by camera shake no matter how firmly you dig the tripod into the sand.I am busy processing the images and theyll be online soon.Big thanks to Connie Hania and Mel for great companyAt some point I will write an article about aurora shooting for www.phototravelreview.com where we are always looking for articles connected to travel and photography. Now the big question is where do I go next. The Baltic at Whitsun and Slovenia in October are being planned but I want a long ...

Gearing up for the next Iceland Adventure

In February I will be off to Iceland again yes this amazing country has truly grabbed me and I cant let go until I have experienced some real winter weather. It is hard to predict what we will encounter as the weather is like in the UK unpredictable. I know what I want real cold frozen waterfalls and clear nights so we get to see the aurora again. I know what I dont want disrupted travel due to snow the howling winds we had in April. But well take what is given. At least Im well prepared with some good thermal gear and we have a secret weapon in Connie our Canadian friend who is well versed in driving in winter conditions and who will teach us how to drive a large 4x4 safely.
New Iceland Images August

Images from the Westfjord of Iceland August trip now uploaded. Not named yet will do so as I gather this info as most of the time I had no idea where I was in this remote and beautiful region with names that dont trip off the tongue and are hard to place on a map and even harder to get to. Summer isnt my favourite season the light and greens dont work for me so I headed north hoping to find kinder light and for brief spells there was some magic and indescribable colours. I discovered mountains that glow purple hues and shades of yellow orange and pure lime greens I have never seen before in a landscape. For the first few days it was actually warmer than in the UK. On my trip to catch my plane early on August 19th I drove through wonderful early aututumnal mists near my home but in Iceland it was surprisingly mild. We had clear skies initially and then days of grey with just a few bright moments. However there were gaps in the skies usually a just as the sun set or rose and...

Iceland had been a dream destination for many years not only because of the photo opportunities but also because I wanted to experience all the fascinating geology. It is an oasis of experiences glaciers hot springs volcanoes black volcanic sands the Northern Lights and an ever changing experience due to its latitiude so far north. It is also almost on the doorstep another planet just over two hours away from Manchester airport. The economic climate in Iceland means that the pound goes further in fact prices are currently similar to the UK except food which is expensive but most guest houses out of towns have cooking facilities so costs can be kept down. The weather was challenging at times April could have given fair weather and I was expecting a climate similar to UK in winter but they were experiencing rather windy times. Their winter had been mild compared to ours at times but April was making up for it. I dont mind the cold I have the right g...

At last my favourite season is here and I managed a week long trip to Wales. The colours have been very late coming and were only just beginning to peak as I left. The weather was surprisingly varied with unseasonally warm weather and just one frosty dawn. A big thanks to Hania who came over from Poland to join me. Great company and wonderful seeing a land I am so familiar with through her new eyes. It was the greens of the fields and green mosses in the woods that caught her eye no doubt a direct result of the wet and yes we did see plenty of rain as well.A selection of images now uploaded to the NEW page.Enjoy the rest of autumn it is not going to last much longer Im afraid but the colours are pretty spectacular just now.Claire

After many years selling and promoting on the web I have started to go local that is I am working local exhibitions in Shropshire and standing at fairs with my prints. I have sold some landscape prints and I have some feedback as to what people would like to hang on their walls.Selling on the interent is hard in so much getting traffic your way takes time and effort but is easy because you never have to meet your critics. Standing at a stall for hours has been enlightening and fascinating to hear what people like and dont and it really has given me fresh eyes on my work. They say the customer is always right and how true because my best seller at Ludlow has caught the attention of the preselection panel of the Digital Camera of the Year awards.I also met a woman whose husband runs this website httpwww.nepaliadventure.co.ukpagesjunglesa...

Phew what a week. 6 days in Wales followed by my first full wedding shoot. So many images to process but Welsh ones will be online tonight under new images. A week where initially the weather didnt excite but ended with the sound of silence and swirling dawn mists at the 4am were magical. A lasting memory is an otter encounter the photos are not worth publishing as I had the wrong lens on but the brave critter swam right by up a little creek followed by some mad splashing and he swam back with a fish in its mouth I had a new second camera with me the Canon 7D bought for its ability to make better use of my zoom lenses. The jury is out as to whether it has the sharpness I want but it did enable me to try some different perspectives and the peacock shot is added so you can also judge yes a peacock down a quiet lane in Wales. The wedding was a new experience and one I had considered but hadnt until now braved but I was asked and decided to give it my best shot. The prewedding shoot went...

Early April I am off to Scotland again. Heading up to the NW corner staying in Lochinver and then a few days inland to Kinlochewe. I hope the winter lingers a while. This year has so far been amazing for photography and I wish Id had more time to make use of it. The past two mornings on the way to work the frosts and mists drove me crazy as I wanted to jump out of the car and shoot the views. On the way home tonight I drove into a red ball setting over the Clee most frustrating. I am looking forwards to welcoming Herman Cater back to the UK. We first met in Scotland and he has given me two fantastic trips to his homeland Slovenia so I am hoping that the Scottish weather will not let us down. Claire

In just 7 days I will be on a plane and heading off to Scotland for a week. Yes flying there and getting a train back. Can anyone explain the economics here If I catch the train to Glasgow on a Friday night it will cost 163106. I am however getting a taxi an hour journey and a plane ticket cheaper than the train costs and that isnt of course a door to door service. The return fare by train on a Saturday is just 16316.Why would I want to take the train for the journey out at this price the last time I did it I stood most of the way and involves 2 changes dragging luggage and camera equipment.I know flying isnt green but I need a better financial incentive to get on a train. If I can get the return trip for 16316 why must I spend 163106 for a crowded Friday night trainCrazy. I look forwards to meeting Mari and getting a Dougie tour of Skye.

Occassionally one is in the right place at the right time and just before Christmas I found myself in Wales. While the rest of the country struggled to cope with the weather we found some snow but not enough to stop us travelling about. Four days of dawn to dusk shooting is a rare treat sometimes the wind chill nearly drove us off the beach but a watery sun usually kept us interested if not warm. One frosty morning saw us struggling up to the New Precipice Walk in my little car eventually it had to be abandoned as the incline and ice got too much. I was a little concerned how I was going to drive down but as we arrived back to the car a minature gritting lorry arrived perfect timing. The images from this trip can been seen under New Images December 2009.I have also updated the Wings Fins and Fur page.I now have prints for sale at the hotel mentioned in the last post a very fine venue indeed.
Autumn in Wales

Images from a 4 day shoot in Southern Snowdonia Wales uploaded. I stayed in Arthog and spent time shooting Llynnau Cregennen Barmouth and the Mawddach Trail. Four days is not enough time unless the weather is on your side and sunset and rises were disappointing but the odd flash of light made the trip wothwhile and I was happy to get a shot of mating Emperor Dragonflies. The autumn colours were peaking and a walk along the Torrent Walk near Dolgellau was a delight but as always woodland walks are a challenge as so many elements compete to fill the frame. The final afternoon gave me a chance to get some classic estuary shots with the sun behind me with strong colours and a brief hour when the tide gave an aopportunity for a few reflections. See here for details of the walk.Claire

After two fabulous weeks in Southern Poland and the High Tatras in Slovakia I at last have found time to put some new images online from my last Welsh trip. Thanks to DSL broadband mobile broadband and other connections these photos can be downloaded and viewed by virtually anyone connected to the Internet. The Polish and Slovakia shots will follow as soon as possible. The theme from the first week is mist every morning around the lake where we stayed saw incoming fog and this made for interest and challenges. The second week presented less photographic opportunity with summer haze but one eventful rainy day gave us a splendid rainbow that came and went continuously over an hour.A trip to an ice cave was also a great experience plus rafting and cable cars a great time.A huge thanks to my host Hania.Claire

Not had time to add new Welsh shots yet but had a fairly productive week will upload on return from next trip. The dawns proved more successful than the sunsets and it was a joy to be below Snowdon for dawn. The accommodation by Lake Padern proved to be a very convenient spot for the mountains sea and Angelsey. The following two weeks promise to be exciting with a trip to Polish and Slovakian mountains and lakes with my wonderful Polish friend Hania as a guide. It will be great to be in the Tatra Mountains again though in a different season. I am not a fan of the summer months usually as the light often lacks drama but after a week in Snowdonia with mists and wonderful dawns I am now converted I just need to try and cope with early morning and late nights for two weeks.

Ardnamurchan was a bit murky weather wise. I suppose I eventually had to have a week of bad weather in Scotland. The images show what was possible during some brief light. Im not wildly excited by them but gives some idea of the potential of the area. Looks like I will have to return

The 5D MarkII is proving to be a great tool. I especially appreciated the auto ISO when hand holding in poor light and images at high ISO settings are much more useable. It is very unforgiving unless top quality lenses are used so I will be upgrading my old trusty 1735 2.8L a fabulous lens on the 5D but with the extra pixels chromatic aberration is a bit of a concern with the new camera if you need to crop in tight or print large.

The Elan Valley Powys reservoirs are just 90 minutes from home but I have to be up early to get there for dawn during the summer. Last night it was cold and still with a few stars in the sky so I decided to see what dawn would be like. It was a good decision all the rain has benefits as the water was pouring over the dams a rare sight in recent years.

Jan 08. Shearwater story in January EOS magazine.
The Manx Shearwater comes on land to breed landing at night to avoid predators. This is an amazing sight well more a noise as tens of thousands of them arrive under the cover of darkness. HOWEVER whilst on Skomer Island I encountered one during the day I photographed it at close quarters and it proceeded to jump on my camera climb up my arm and sit on my head Fortunately my friend Rosemary was there with her camera to catch the event. I was smiling for a week............................ Claire
